It’s As easy as riding a bicycle

This class is perfect for adults who want to get back in the saddle!

Even if you haven’t been on two wheels in a long time, I can help you build the basic skills to give you the confidence to get around on your bike.

  • Beginner - parking lot & guided on-street riding

  • 1-hour of private on-bike instruction

  • Bring your own bike & helmet

  • Take-home tip sheet.

Instruction will focus on the bike handling skills you need to ride successfully in town.

My classes are based on the League of American Bicyclists’ “Smart Cycling” concepts and adapted to adult learners and local conditions.

Detailed description

Learn to Ride

Private, 1-hour class. Outdoors on-bike, in a parking lot, and on-street.

If you have a driver’s license, you already know most of the rules of the road.

Topics covered:

  • starting & stopping

  • keeping your balance

  • speed control

  • hazard avoidance

  • where to ride

  • interacting with other road users.

We’ll also talk about all the things that “get in the way” when you’re riding down the street:

  • Dogs on long leashes,

  • People taking pictures,

  • Telephone poles,

  • Giant trucks with gigantic mirrors.

And we’ll cover the behaviors that often cause folks resent those of us on bikes:

  • Riding on the sidewalk,

  • Riding on the wrong side of the street,

  • Riding the wrong way on one-way streets,

  • Riding too fast,

  • Riding without lights at night.

You’ll get a take-home cheat sheet, a fun quiz on bike safety, and build your confidence to ride on your own!
