There were a number of great updates at the Outer Cape Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan workshop in Provincetown on November 12.

Route 6 Multi-Use Path Option
Martha Hevenor of the Cape Cod Commission revealed that MassDOT is willing to look at putting a separated multi-use path alongside Route 6. This is a big shift, and hopefully shows a change in direction now that MassDOT’s separated bicycle facility guidelines have been released.

Hevenor said that the master plan will be completed in the winter of 2016-2017, as there is still lots of work to be done by the steering committee and town committees to finalize the primary route, secondary routes, and additional facilities at destinations (such as bike racks and bike maintenance stations).

The towns and Cape Cod National Seashore are not standing still waiting for this master plan to be finished before starting on bicycle improvements.

Three Primary Route Alternatives
Cape Cod Commission planner Sarah Korjeff presented the three alternatives for the Master Plan’s “primary route”, which would be a new bicycle facility connecting the Outer Cape towns.

Alternative A (RED): Rail bed and bike paths

Alternative A (red) is a combination of improvements to existing bike routes (primarily striped “bike lanes”, which she referred to as “shoulders” from time to time, which made them seem like minor improvements), bike paths, and rail beds.

Alternative B (BLUE): Scenic local roads
Alternative B (BLUE): Scenic local roads

Alternative B (blue) is the “scenic local roads” option which includes minor widening and striping of existing roads to add 4-foot bicycle lanes where possible. This option routes bicycles along Commercial St. in Provincetown, where no dedicated bike facility would be added.

Alternative C (green) adds a separated multi-use path alongside Route 6 for the entire length from Wellfleet all the way to Herring Cove Beach. In Provincetown it would most likely run along the North (or East, depending on how you rotate your map) side of Route 6 to avoid the wetlands at Shank Painter Pond. This is the first time an option to upgrade this entire section of Route 6 has been presented.

Workshop participants marked up maps that were divided into seven segments. Preferences were indicated by placing colored dots for each of the three alternatives.

Hevenor said that subsequent steering committee meetings and discussions with the town bicycle committees will take place, but that dates for those meetings have not yet been established.
